The Race

We had a great talk in church today, and this poem was the basis of it. I have thought about it all day and am really missing my Dad. However I know he is cheering me on from the other side... and for that I am very grateful!

The Race
by D. H. Groberg

Whenever I start to hang my head in front of failure’s face, my downward fall is broken by the memory of a race. A children’s race, young boys, young men; how I remember well, excitement sure, but also fear, it wasn’t hard to tell.
~
They all lined up so full of hope, each thought to win that race or tie for first, or if not that, at least take second place. Their parents watched from off the side, each cheering for their son, and each boy hoped to show his folks that he would be the one.
~
The whistle blew and off they flew, like chariots of fire, to win, to be the hero there, was each young boy’s desire. One boy in particular, whose dad was in the crowd, was running in the lead and thought “My dad will be so proud.”
~
But as he speeded down the field and crossed a shallow dip, the little boy who thought he’d win, lost his step and slipped.Trying hard to catch himself, his arms flew everyplace, and midst the laughter of the crowd he fell flat on his face.
~
As he fell, his hope fell too; he couldn’t win it now. Humiliated, he just wished to disappear somehow. But as he fell his dad stood up and showed his anxious face, which to the boy so clearly said, “Get up and win that race!”
~
He quickly rose, no damage done, behind a bit that’s all, and ran with all his mind and might to make up for his fall. So anxious to restore himself, to catch up and to win, his mind went faster than his legs. He slipped and fell again.
~
He wished that he had quit before with only one disgrace. “I’m hopeless as a runner now, I shouldn’t try to race.”But through the laughing crowd he searched and found his father’s face with a steady look that said again, “Get up and win that race!”
~
So he jumped up to try again, ten yards behind the last. “If I’m to gain those yards,” he thought, “I’ve got to run real fast!” Exceeding everything he had, he regained eight, then ten...but trying hard to catch the lead, he slipped and fell again.
~
Defeat! He lay there silently. A tear dropped from his eye. “There’s no sense running anymore! Three strikes I’m out! Why try?I’ve lost, so what’s the use?” he thought. “I’ll live with my disgrace.” But then he thought about his dad, who soon he’d have to face.
~
“Get up,” an echo sounded low, “you haven’t lost at all, for all you have to do to win is rise each time you fall. Get up!” the echo urged him on, “Get up and take your place! You were not meant for failure here! Get up and win that race!”
~
So, up he rose to run once more, refusing to forfeit, and he resolved that win or lose, at least he wouldn’t quit. So far behind the others now, the most he’d ever been, still he gave it all he had and ran like he could win.
~
Three times he’d fallen stumbling, three times he rose again. Too far behind to hope to win, he still ran to the end. They cheered another boy who crossed the line and won first place, head high and proud and happy -- no falling, no disgrace.
~
But, when the fallen youngster crossed the line, in last place, the crowd gave him a greater cheer for finishing the race. And even though he came in last with head bowed low, unproud, you would have thought he’d won the race, to listen to the crowd.
~
And to his dad he sadly said, “I didn’t do so well.” “To me, you won,” his father said. “You rose each time you fell.”And now when things seem dark and bleak and difficult to face, the memory of that little boy helps me in my own race.
~
For all of life is like that race, with ups and downs and all. And all you have to do to win is rise each time you fall. And when depression and despair shout loudly in my face, another voice within me says, “Get up and win that race!”

Brachs

The one thing I look forward to at Valentines, is the Brachs Conversation Hearts. This year...I could never find them... only the NASTY Sweetarts brand. I do NOT like those. I was a little sad to see Valentines come and go, and I had not had ONE single Brachs Conversation Heart. Well, today I DID see some. I was at the grocery store, they had some Valentines candy on sale. There were a few of the little boxes and a few in a heart shaped box. The smaller one, was marked like 39¢. I just about grabbed one, when I remembered that the drugstore always puts candy on sale right after a holiday. So I ran next door and scored BIG time!! I found 1lb 2oz bags of them at 75% off.... So I paid 65¢ a bag. I took the last three! I left 2 bags of the big conversation hearts. NOW.... If only I can control myself and make them last a few months! :)

Dryer Sheets~

Ok.... So as I was switching the laundry from the washer to the dryer, I reached up to grab a dryer sheet and noticed they were getting low. My first thought was DANG!!!.... "I hate buying them"... I hate buying them because I think they are so expensive. Then I thought........ "There has GOT to be a cheaper homemade method." So I went to the internet in search of something to help me out. I found a few ideas that I want to give a try, since I have no idea which one will work best for me. The first 3 are pretty much the same just vary a little bit.

Pour a 50/50 mix of fabric softener and water into a spray bottle. Spray an old wash cloth 3 or 4 times. Then throw the rag into the dryer with wet clothes.

OR….

Pour fabric softener into a spray bottle, spray an old washcloth 4-6 times and then put into the dryer with wet clothes. A small refill carton should last you over a year. (This is the same as the recipe above, just more concentrate)

OR……

Soak a clean rag in ultra fabric softener and let dry. Put the dry rag in your dryer and leave it there. This will soften your clothes like a dryer sheet, but will last a long time. I have just started using it and have done 30 loads and the same rag is still working. I have another rag ready and waiting for when this first one runs out. Every couple of weeks, re-soak and hang to dry and start all over.

OR.....

Use Sponges In Fabric Softener
Get a large jar, cut up a sponge and put the pieces in it. Then take a couple of capfuls of Downy, or whatever kind you want, and fill the rest with water. When you need a dryer sheet, reach for the sponge. You just wring it out, throw it in, then when the laundry is done, put it back in the jar! This works wonderfully and save a lot of money and garbage from the dryer sheets.

I will be testing them out to see which one I want to go with. Besides saving money, if I have stuff on hand to make them, it will be great to have in my year supply.

I also have recipes for homemade laundry soap, cough medicine, furniture polish, windex, etc... I have the supplies for those, but have yet to give them a try.

By the way...... I don't want to go the route of cutting the dryer sheets in half. I think one of these other methods will be much cheaper.

Blog update...

I finally got my camera back and a day off work, so I am finally able to update my blog. So here are some updates of the last few months........

Mimi's Baptism

Saturday February 13th, Mimi was baptized. It was a great day. Both Grammy and Grumpy and Grandma Ashton & Grandpa Ashton were able to make it. I am disapppointed that I forgot to get pictures with them. I guess it's because I forgot that I actually have my camera back!

Jr. High State Wrestling

Last weekend (February 5th and 6th), we took off to Tucson for Levi's State Wrestling. He did a great job. I of course didn't have my camera still because I had left it at Mela's house. So the ones I do have were from my cell phone or Brycie's camera. Both of wich were not real great pictures. BUT heck I was so dang nervous when he wrestled that I couldn't take great pictures any way.

State Wrestling is pure craziness........

Waiting..........

All of St. John's had byes the first round and then Levi was the first one to wrestle from St. Johns. I stood there next to the announcers table at the edge of the mat screaming my lungs out and jumping up and down. When Levi pinned his guy, I was so excieted I started to tear up. Infact, when the announcer said to me......."How does that heart feel Mama?" I was so emotional that I couldn't even say what I wanted. Which was......"It feels damn good!" All I could get out was... "WOW!"
Here he is in his first match...
Levi lost by points to his second match. The other kid was 2nd in his seed and was really mad because he couldn't pin Levi.

The next day Levi had his 3rd match and just about had his guy pinned in the 1st and 3rd round and then lost by points! He was pretty disappointed, but I think he did a fantastic job. He fought hard every time and never gave up.

Brycie was a little bored at times..........
Mimi used my iPod to play games.........

Anyway... St. Johns took 2nd over all and scored some nice beanies.......

Brycie's Birthday

We spent Brycie's 11th Birthday in Buckeye. My sister Mela was having a baby that day, so we went down to help out.

A green iPod.........

A Sliders Grill from Grammy and Grumpy.........
Her favorite part of her day was getting a new cousin on her birthday... Preston Don Christiansen.......

Birthday cake......
